This website is devoted to travellers in Egypt from ancient times to the nineteenth century; running it is a group of enthusiasts and academics. It is our intention, on a regular basis, to publish articles and studies on the life, travels and discoveries of the numerous travellers to Egypt and the Near East, from ancient times to the nineteenth century, on their experiences as told in the travel books of the period, with descriptions of the places and people they encountered, as well as articles on many other related subjects, such as Napoleon’s expedition to Egypt, the birth of Egyptology, studies on archaeological discoveries, the business initiatives of the period, including the tourist cruises organized by Tomas Cook & Son’s tourist cruises, and so on.
So if you are a scholar or a freelance writer interested in the subject and want to publish articles, essays, book reviews and reports on exhibitions and conferences on these subject please drop us a line.
Our goal is to provide an interesting and enjoyable tool, not just for academics, but also for people approaching the subject for the first time.
The story till now
The first release of this website began in 1999, as companion of the exhibit “Carlo Vidua and the Travellers in Egypt of 1800”. The exhibit was kept in Conzano – a nice Italian town in Piedmont – and then in Genoa (Liguria) from an idea of Maurizio Re and Giorgio Agnese. Marco Maroccolo give his contribution building the companion website.
The love of Marco Maroccolo for Egypt, ancient books and travellers grown and he, in 2004, re-launched this new version of the website with the name Travellers in Egypt as a daily-published online magazine with a dedicated staff of people. Since then, Travellers in Egypt has been consistently recognized as one the Internet’s finest publications about ancient travellers in Egypt and Near East and its readership has grown to include people all around the world.
A Note on Our Feature Departments
We publish articles in the following departments:
A Note on Links, Feeds, and Technology
Some of our articles made use of hyperlinks to other sites; we are happy to connect to things around the Internet but make no claim of responsibility for their content.
Also, if you reads RSS feeds, then you may find this link of particular interest.
Behind the scenes, Travellers in Egypt is managed by Movable Type, a very powerful, easy-to-use, and inexpensive content management system built by Six Apart.
A Note on Advertising
Because the more we publish, the harder it is to keep the good ship (or we must say Dahabeah) afloat on good will alone. Because being able to pay for electricity keeps our typing hands ablaze. Because we cannot live on bread alone.
Those who would like to support Travellers in Egypt by clicking a Google ads at the end of each article may do so.
